HANG SENG ROUTE CHECK
Hang Seng Business Account for a Hong Kong Company
Choose between Biz Virtual+ and IBS, test the remote route, and prove a new company is ready to operate.
A Hong Kong company can start a Hang Seng business account application online, but the useful first question is which route it can actually finish. Remote completion depends on the company, every connected party, their identity documents and locations, digital verification, KYC calls and e-Sign—not merely on having a Certificate of Incorporation.
As viewed on September 17, 2026, Hang Seng presents Biz Virtual+ for eligible start-ups and local SMEs and Integrated Business Solutions Account, or IBS, for broader SME and corporate needs. Product fit, channel eligibility, evidence quality and activation are four separate gates.
Key takeaways
- Biz Virtual+ and IBS differ in intended customer, remote-opening speed, balance condition and service scope.
- A fully online route is conditional; a Business Banking Centre route remains available when remote criteria are not met.
- Hang Seng’s local-company checklist asks for entity, people, ownership, business, funding and service-user evidence.
- The opening administration fee, company-search fee, initial deposit and ongoing relationship-balance condition are different amounts.
- Approval is not operational completion: credentials, permissions and a controlled test transaction still need verification.
Choose the operating route before the product
Start with the transactions the company must perform during its first year. The Biz Virtual+ product page positions that account for eligible start-ups and local SMEs. It highlights digital access, preferential FPS pricing and a first-year monthly-fee waiver, but excludes trade services other than bank guarantees under its published application requirements.
The IBS product page describes an all-in-one arrangement covering HKD current, HKD, RMB and foreign-currency savings, time deposits and other sub-accounts, with broader business services. That breadth is useful only when the company needs it and can sustain the relationship-balance condition.
Choose from actual payment, currency, cheque and trade requirements—not from the fastest advertised opening time. If the legal entity is not yet ready, align its ownership, registered particulars and records through the Hong Kong incorporation pathway before creating a bank application that contradicts them.
Run the connected-party remote gate
Hang Seng’s online business-account page says a Hong Kong-registered company may use the remote route when connected parties hold Hong Kong or mainland China resident identity cards and are physically in Hong Kong or mainland China while submitting, completing digital ID verification and e-Sign. The bank retains final discretion over remote eligibility.
“Connected parties” includes directors, authorised signers, principal shareholders, beneficial owners, key controllers and direct appointees. Map every person before starting. One participant with an incompatible identification or location condition can change the route even if the director who starts the application qualifies.
For the shortest published case, the same page states that all connected parties must be HKID holders and located in Hong Kong, with digital ID verification and e-Sign completed. It displays as-fast-as-three-business-day timing for Biz Virtual+ and five business days for IBS; other circumstances may take two to three weeks. These are conditional scenarios, not approval promises or deadlines.
Identify the workable Hang Seng route
Map the connected parties and operating needs before choosing remote opening or a Business Banking Centre.
Build the new-company evidence bridge
For a Hong Kong limited company established less than one year, Hang Seng’s local-company account-opening checklist lists the Certificate of Incorporation, valid Business Registration Certificate, incorporation form NNC1 or the applicable equivalent, Articles of Association and relevant change records. It also calls for identification and nationality evidence for the required directors, authorised signers, principal shareholders holding at least 10%, beneficial owners and key controllers.
The checklist treats a corporate shareholder as a separate evidence branch: prepare a director-certified ownership chart that traces intermediate owners to the ultimate beneficial owners. Add identity evidence for users of requested services, such as the primary Business e-Banking user. Certified copies and additional documents may be required in the form acceptable to the bank.
A new company without audited history is not evidence-free. Hang Seng lists the beneficial owners’ recent financial or source-of-wealth evidence, including a tax demand note or personal bank statement, plus agreements or communications with potential buyers or suppliers as examples it may consider. Support these with a coherent business description, expected counterparties, countries, transaction values and the origin of the initial deposit. Every claim should resolve to a named record, a responsible person and a consistent amount.
Use the route-readiness decision tree
Use this gatecard before submission. “Pass” means the file has evidence for the criterion; it does not mean Hang Seng has approved the application.
| Gate | Completion test | If unresolved |
|---|---|---|
| Service fit | Required payments, currencies, cheque and trade functions match Biz Virtual+ or IBS. | Change product or compare another bank. |
| Remote route | Every connected party’s ID, physical location and digital steps meet the current criteria. | Request the centre route; do not omit a person. |
| Ownership | Registers, incorporation form and ownership chart reconcile to the same ultimate owners. | Correct records and explain each layer. |
| Business reality | Orders, contracts or counterpart communications support the declared model and values. | Build evidence before submission. |
| Funding | The first deposit and continuing capital trace to documented sources. | Reconcile owner, bank record and transfer path. |
Turn the checklist into a reviewable file
Connect each entity, person, business and funding statement to dated supporting evidence.
Separate the four cost figures
As viewed on September 17, 2026, Hang Seng’s campaign page states an HKD 1,000 administration fee for remote opening without an in-person interview and an additional HKD 300 for opening through a Business Banking Centre. Its commercial-banking tariff effective April 1, 2026 lists an HKD 1,300 account-opening administration fee and an HKD 150 company-search fee for a local company. The tariff says the search and opening fees are non-refundable whether or not the account opens.
The same tariff lists a special HKD 8,000 fee, plus the HKD 1,300 administration fee, for specified complex cases including a company with three or more ownership layers. Separately, the local-company checklist lists an HKD 20,000 initial deposit. A deposit remains the customer’s money subject to account terms; it is not the opening fee.
Ongoing balance conditions are separate again. Hang Seng currently shows Biz Virtual+ monthly fees waived for the first 12 months and, from month 13, waived at a Total Relationship Balance of at least HKD 50,000 equivalent. IBS displays a waiver at HKD 100,000 equivalent and a monthly fee of HKD 200 below that amount. Verify the live tariff, route and any promotion on the day of submission.
Plan the online handoff
Hang Seng describes the customer-facing flow as three steps: submit company details, complete digital identity verification and complete e-Sign. Operationally, insert two controls. Before submission, freeze an approved data sheet covering names, addresses, ownership percentages, roles, expected activity and funding. After submission, appoint one coordinator to answer bank questions without creating conflicting versions.
The bank says its e-Sign SMS follows satisfactory document review, successful digital identification and completion of KYC calls. Therefore, an e-Sign request is a milestone after review steps, not the start of due diligence. Keep originals accessible and ensure every connected party knows the declared business model, counterparties and funding path.
Control activation after approval
Hang Seng’s IBS account FAQ says account tools requested by the customer are delivered on different schedules. It currently indicates about one week after successful opening for cheque books, deposit cards, Hang Seng card materials and Business e-Banking credentials, while phone-banking PIN collection advice may take two weeks.
Use an activation register: confirm the exact legal account name, each currency sub-account, primary user, maker-checker permissions, transfer limits, security device, notification contacts and collection address. Then perform an appropriately small incoming and outgoing transaction that matches the declared account purpose. Record the result and unresolved restrictions.
If owners are outside Hong Kong, involve a corporate shareholder or have a more complex operating footprint, review the remote-opening constraints for Hong Kong companies before treating Hang Seng’s digital route as the plan. A centre appointment or another bank may be the correct path rather than a failed remote attempt.
Make the Hang Seng decision
Proceed with Biz Virtual+ when its digital-first scope covers the genuine activity, the company satisfies the current product and remote conditions, and the post-year-one balance requirement is commercially sensible. Proceed with IBS when broader currencies, cheque handling or business services justify its account structure and relationship requirement.
Hold the application when a connected party is missing, statutory records disagree, the initial deposit lacks a traceable source, or claimed revenue has no supporting counterparty record. Switch channel when the evidence is sound but remote eligibility fails. Compare another bank when the product itself cannot support required trade, limits, currencies or access.
The decision is “go” only when product fit, route eligibility, evidence completeness and activation ownership all have named answers. Anything less is a defined hold or switch action—not a reason to submit an incomplete file.

Frequently asked questions
Can every Hong Kong company open a Hang Seng account fully online?
No. Remote completion depends on the company and all connected parties satisfying Hang Seng’s current identity, location, verification, KYC and e-Sign conditions. The bank retains final discretion and may require a centre appointment.
Which account is aimed at a new local company?
Biz Virtual+ is positioned for eligible start-ups and local SMEs, while IBS targets SMEs and well-established corporates with broader service needs. Eligibility and required functions should decide the product.
How fast can Hang Seng open the account?
The published shortest remote cases are three business days for Biz Virtual+ and five for IBS, subject to stated connected-party, document, digital-ID, KYC and e-Sign conditions. Other cases may take longer.
What can a new company use as business proof?
Hang Seng’s checklist gives examples including potential buyer or supplier agreements or communications and recent financial or source-of-wealth evidence for beneficial owners. The bank may request more.
Is the HKD 20,000 initial deposit an opening fee?
No. The checklist’s initial deposit is distinct from administrative and company-search charges and from the Total Relationship Balance used for ongoing monthly-fee waivers.
