LICENCE VERIFICATION

How to Verify Licensed Cayman Islands Corporate Service Providers

Build a dated evidence record that connects the actual Cayman service firm to the authority it claims.

Verify a Cayman Islands corporate service provider by identifying the exact legal entity doing the work, checking its current CIMA record and confirming that its authority matches the proposed service. Then match that entity to the engagement and independently verify the contact channel. A company registration, group logo or licence image on a sales website is insufficient.

This process concerns the service provider. It does not establish that your new exempted company holds a financial-services licence or that CIMA endorses the transaction. If a search result or service scope remains unresolved, pause payment and obtain clarification before proceeding.

Key takeaways

  • Obtain the provider’s legal name and claimed authority before searching for a trading brand.
  • Use the official CIMA site directly and preserve the result with the verification date.
  • Company Manager and Corporate Service Provider licences have different service boundaries.
  • A related group company’s licence does not by itself verify the contracting or performing entity.
  • No result needs investigation; it is not automatic proof of unlawful activity.

Identify the firm performing the Cayman work

Ask for the name, registered address, regulatory reference and claimed licence category of the local firm. Identify any separate sales coordinator, invoicing company and document custodian. Where several entities are involved, request a simple role schedule showing which one supplies the registered office, performs corporate services and receives your instructions.

The parties involved in company registration in the Cayman Islands can have different roles. Formation coordination is not evidence that the coordinator itself holds a Cayman licence. A local regulated firm should be identified on its own facts; a statement that work is handled through a network leaves the key identity unresolved.

Verify the performing legal entity. Preserve the spelling and legal suffix before searching. An acronym may refer to a group, an overseas affiliate or a former trading name. Ask the provider to explain any difference between its website branding and the entity that will accept your company as a client.

Which Cayman firm will perform the work?

Share the proposed parties so the local provider can be separated from the sales and invoicing entities.

Run the official CIMA search

Open CIMA’s current regulated-entity search from the official domain. Its instructions permit a full or partial entity name and a sector selection, including All. Search the complete legal name first; then use a distinctive partial name if spelling or punctuation prevents a useful result. Do not search only the proposed name of your own new company.

  1. Enter the provider’s supplied legal name and select the relevant sector or All.
  2. Submit the search and compare every plausible result against the supplied identity.
  3. Record the displayed reference number, name, type, status and status effective date.
  4. Save the official source URL, search terms and the date you performed the check.

Distinguish the status effective date from your search date. A record may show that a status began earlier; your dated capture records when you observed it. A downloaded image without its source and capture date is weaker evidence. Recheck before engagement when a material interval has passed or the provider announces an identity change.

These are public verification steps checked on November 5, 2026. They are not instructions for obtaining a licence or submitting incorporation through CIMA. Corporate registration and regulatory supervision are separate functions.

Match the authority to the proposed service

CIMA’s corporate services explanation distinguishes a Company Manager Licence from a Corporate Service Provider Licence. The latter covers the services in section 3(1)(a)–(e) of the Companies Management Act; the former has a wider statutory scope. Do not assume two results with different types are interchangeable.

Ask the provider to connect the actual promised service to its authority and any relevant restrictions. The appropriate legal basis depends on the service and entity; do not invent a licensing conclusion from the word “administration” in an advertisement. If a firm relies on another statutory route or exception, obtain its written explanation and verify the relevant basis rather than forcing it into the wrong category.

Identity point Compare with If different
Official result name Local performing entity Request evidence explaining the relationship
Displayed authority type Exact contracted services Seek a scope explanation before appointment
Current displayed status Claim of present authority Clarify the current position independently
Contract and invoice names Agreed payer and provider roles Obtain a documented role and payment chain

This is a reconciliation tool, not an alternative regulatory register. A matching company number at the General Registry establishes a corporate identity question; it does not replace the separate authority check for the work being offered.

Resolve a provider-authority mismatch Identify the performer, compare official authority and service scope, then proceed on a match or pause for clarification. Name the actual service firm Identity, status and service scope match? Yes Unresolved Authenticate contact and retain evidence Pause and clarify the specific mismatch
A missing or inconsistent result leads to clarification rather than an automatic accusation.

Resolve a missing or conflicting result

A missing result can arise from an incorrect name, an affiliate being named instead of the licensee, a historical name or a mistaken claim. Repeat the search once with a sensible partial name and All, then ask for the exact legal entity and reference. Do not keep changing the search until a vaguely similar firm appears.

If the provider identifies a different authorised affiliate, require the engagement to explain the allocation of work. The affiliate’s name should not remain a footnote while another entity promises to perform the regulated service. Escalate unresolved authority questions to CIMA through independently obtained official contact information or seek Cayman legal advice.

Use the allocation of incorporation-agent roles to distinguish a commercial intermediary from the actual local service firm. A group relationship is an explanation to verify, not a substitute for permission. The result may justify revising the engagement rather than accusing the entire group of operating without authority.

Does the search leave a mismatch?

Bring the legal names and official result for a focused check of the unresolved authority question.

Authenticate the contact and payment chain

A genuine licence can be copied into a fraudulent email or website. Verify the communication channel independently before sending identity documents or money. Reach the provider through an independently established channel and ask it to confirm the named contact, engagement and payment instructions. Avoid relying on a phone number contained only in the disputed message.

CIMA’s warning about impersonation explains that regulatory identity claims can be misused. A valid register entry therefore needs a separate connection to the people contacting you. A last-minute bank-detail change should trigger fresh confirmation even where the original onboarding check was satisfactory.

Payment identity should reconcile with the documented arrangement. A different invoice issuer may have a legitimate explanation, but request that explanation in writing and confirm which party is responsible for the services. Never treat familiarity with a logo as sufficient verification of an unexpected beneficiary.

Retain a dated Cayman provider verification record

Proceed when the legal entity, appropriate authority, current status, proposed service and authenticated contact chain are consistent. Preserve a short record containing the official result, search date, contract version, named performer and any explanation for differences. Record unresolved points as unresolved rather than marking the entire exercise passed.

If a critical discrepancy survives clarification, stop onboarding with that party until the position is established. Repeat the relevant check when the performing firm changes, a new service is added or the contact and payment chain changes. Verification is a decision about the evidence available at a stated time, not a permanent assurance of future performance.

Ready to document the appointment?

Confirm the performing entity and service boundary before committing documents or funds.

Frequently asked questions

Does CIMA verification certify the quality of every employee?

No. A provider’s authority check does not evaluate each employee’s competence, workload or handling of your particular file. Assess the delivery team separately.

Can I rely on a licence certificate sent by email?

Use it as an identity lead, then check the official current record and authenticate the sender. A copied certificate can be misused.

Is the new client company supposed to appear as a corporate-service licensee?

Not merely because it hires a provider. You are checking the firm performing the relevant corporate services, not treating ordinary incorporation as a financial licence.

Should I publish that a firm is unlicensed after one failed search?

No. First resolve naming, group-entity and authority questions. A failed name search is an evidence gap rather than a proven legal finding.
