Tax decision correction
Tax Assessment Corrections in Indonesia: Errors to Identify and Evidence to Submit
Make the requested change reproducible from the issued decision and its evidence.
An Indonesian tax assessment correction can address writing mistakes, arithmetic errors and specified errors in applying tax provisions in eligible decisions. It is not a universal substitute for an objection. Identify the exact defect, explain the requested correction in Indonesian and submit supporting records while separately protecting payment and challenge deadlines.
Key takeaways
- Use the issued assessment as the reference point, including its number, period and delivery evidence.
- An error-to-proof worksheet separates calculation mistakes from disagreement over taxable facts.
- PMK 118/2024 must be read with the amendment effective October 2, 2026.
- Keep submission, authority decision and accounting reconciliation as separate completion events.
Classify the error before requesting relief
Pembetulan is a defined correction procedure. Under Articles 2 and 3 of PMK 118/2024 , it can address writing mistakes, arithmetic errors and specified errors in applying tax provisions in eligible assessments or decisions. It is not a label for every disagreement with the tax office. Start by identifying the issued document, the exact field or calculation challenged and the result you want changed.
A writing mistake might concern a name, address, taxpayer number or period without changing the tax payable. An arithmetic error concerns calculation, such as an incorrect addition or multiplication. Specified application errors include matters such as a rate, exchange rate, sanction calculation or tax credit, subject to the rule’s particular conditions. A dispute about whether a transaction is taxable, deductible or supported by evidence can require a different route.
Describe the defect before choosing the remedy.
A company’s own return amendment, a tax-payment allocation correction and a correction of an authority-issued assessment are separate tasks. If the payment reference is wrong but the assessment is correct, changing the assessment may not solve the real problem. If the authority disputes the commercial substance, presenting the disagreement as a typographical mistake can lose time without protecting the appropriate procedural rights.
The governing procedure must also be current. PMK 71/2026, effective October 2, 2026 amends PMK 118/2024, including provisions concerning objections and other relief. Its existence does not mean that every application belongs to the same remedy. Read the amended provision relevant to the requested relief and preserve the version used for the filing decision.
Identify the correct procedural route
Provide the issued decision and the disputed entries so the type of error can be assessed.
Build an error-to-proof worksheet from the assessment
Create one worksheet that a reviewer can reproduce from the documents. Copy the assessment or decision number, tax type, period, issue date and relevant receipt or sending evidence. Preserve the original document unchanged. Put the disputed entry, proposed replacement and supporting record on the same row so the application does not rely on a general complaint.
| Issue to test | Evidence to attach | Explanation needed | Boundary to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Incorrect identity or period | Issued decision, current taxpayer record and relevant corporate evidence | Identify the exact field and support the correct value | Whether the requested change is a writing error within the rule |
| Addition or multiplication mismatch | Full calculation, input schedule and independent recomputation | Show every input and the corrected result | Whether the inputs themselves are disputed |
| Rate or exchange-rate application | Relevant provision and dated transaction/calculation records | Connect the correct rule to the precise line | Whether eligibility or transaction substance is contested |
| Tax-credit mismatch | Withholding/payment evidence and reconciliation to the decision | Trace the credit without double counting | Specific limitations, including disputed VAT input credits |
Use an explicit numerical bridge when the mistake affects an amount. For illustration only, if accepted inputs of IDR 12,000,000 and IDR 8,000,000 have been added as IDR 22,000,000, show the original line, the two supported inputs and the corrected sum of IDR 20,000,000. This is an arithmetic demonstration, not a reported client case or an estimate of a tax liability.
By contrast, asserting that an additional expense of IDR 2,000,000 should be deductible changes the accepted inputs. The application needs a reasoned procedural assessment; the desired final number alone does not make it an arithmetic correction. Keep disagreement about facts separate from a mechanical error in calculating agreed facts.
The corporate tax audit evidence file can supply the source schedules and correspondence needed to establish what was actually assessed. Reconcile the worksheet to the final issued decision, not merely an earlier working paper or a spreadsheet circulated during the audit.
Prepare and deliver a complete correction application
Article 3 requires a written application in Indonesian that explains the alleged error and the reasons for correction. One application concerns one eligible assessment or decision, and it must be signed by the taxpayer, representative or authorised proxy. Use the correction format in Annex A of PMK 118/2024 as the starting point and confirm the current permitted delivery channel for the taxpayer and document concerned.
- Identify the company, NPWP and the specific assessment or decision. Match the document number and period exactly.
- State each proposed correction, its legal category and the requested replacement. Keep distinct errors separately numbered within the same document-specific application.
- Attach the error-to-proof worksheet and the source records. Use an attachment index with page or document references.
- Check the signatory’s capacity. Where a proxy signs, retain the specific authority and evidence that the representative meets the applicable requirements.
- Submit through the officially permitted channel and retain the receipt showing the document, date and attachments delivered. Record a named company contact for follow-up.
Do not guess a portal menu or upload an incomplete file merely to obtain a screenshot. Confirm that the service selected is correction of the relevant authority decision, rather than amendment of a return. Where the available channel differs by document or taxpayer circumstances, document the route confirmed for this application.
A receipt establishes delivery; it is not approval. The tax authority first checks the application requirements. A request that is returned or not considered has a different status from a correction application examined and rejected on its merits. Keep the actual authority response because the next action depends on which outcome occurred.
If the company’s name or representative changed after incorporation, use the supporting corporate documents to explain the current authority to sign. The underlying Indonesian company registration records establish the corporate identity layer; the tax representation and submission requirements remain a separate assessment.
Run decision, payment and challenge deadlines separately
Under Article 6 of PMK 118/2024, the Director General of Taxes generally has up to six months from receipt of the correction application to issue a correction decision. That is an authority decision period, not a promise of an immediate response. The regulation also addresses the consequence of exceeding that period without the specified decision or return response, and the subsequent issuance of the relevant decision.
A correction request should not be treated as automatic protection for every other deadline.
Maintain three separate diary entries: the correction decision period, the payment or collection position and any objection or other challenge period. Identify the starting event for each from the applicable rule and document. A later correction can have specific procedural consequences; do not apply a blanket assumption that all clocks restart or that none can change.
Escalate a possible substantive dispute while the correction evidence is being assembled. Waiting for a correction response may be inappropriate where another remedy has a shorter applicable filing window. A qualified adviser should determine which rights require protection and whether the chosen applications can be made together in the circumstances.
Keep a dated record of incoming notices and authority requests. Note who received them, how they were delivered and which response date applies. The amendment under PMK 71/2026 includes procedural changes outside the narrow correction chapter, so an old checklist should not govern an objection or relief request merely because it was used for a prior correction.
Check the deadline register
Bring the decision, receipt dates and any pending application to identify rights requiring action.
Respond to evidence requests and close the accounting loop
The authority can request documents, data, explanations or additional information in examining a correction application. Respond to the actual request with an indexed package. If a requested record is unavailable, explain its status and provide the available contemporaneous evidence; do not backdate documents or replace an unsupported fact with a confident narrative.
Record each submission against the original application reference. Distinguish a clarification from a change to the requested correction. Before changing the amount or scope, review the procedural effect rather than simply sending a new spreadsheet that conflicts with the signed application.
Once a decision arrives, compare it line by line with the request. Identify what was granted, what was refused and the reasons. Then reconcile the company’s tax account, payment records, ledger and any related filings. A correction decision does not justify altering unrelated periods or deleting the original assessment from the record.
Close the file only after the decision and the company’s records have been reconciled.
A finance handover should identify the residual payable or credit, the accounting treatment, any follow-on action and its owner. Retain the original assessment, application, evidence index, submission receipts, correspondence and final decision as one traceable package. This allows a new director or adviser to understand the outcome without reconstructing the dispute.
Submit the supportable correction and protect any wider dispute
Use pembetulan when the identified defect fits the correction rules and the requested replacement can be demonstrated from reliable evidence. Submit the Indonesian application with a reproducible calculation or field comparison, valid authority and a retained delivery receipt.
If the company is challenging the taxable facts or underlying tax treatment, obtain a procedural decision before relying on correction alone. Assign one person to maintain the separate deadline register and another to review the numerical bridge. The first protects the route; the second makes the requested result verifiable.
Prepare a documented correction submission
Use the error worksheet and authority documents to define the application and follow-up work.
Frequently asked questions
Can one letter seek corrections to several assessments?
The correction requirement is one application for one eligible assessment or decision. Several errors within that document can be explained and indexed separately.
Does changing my return automatically change an issued assessment?
No automatic result should be assumed. A taxpayer return amendment and correction of an authority-issued decision are distinct procedures.
What if only the English translation contains the error?
Compare it with the official issued document. A translation defect does not by itself establish an error in the authority’s decision.
Should I delete the original calculation after a correction is granted?
Retain it with the corrected decision and reconciliation. The original and replacement values establish what changed and why.
