Enterprise registration charges
SSM Business Registration Fees: Sole Proprietor and Partnership
Choose the correct fee basis and reconcile years, branches and additional purchases.
SSM business registration fees start at MYR 30 per year for an eligible personal-name sole proprietor and MYR 60 per year for a trade-name business, including an ordinary partnership. The amount payable changes with the registration term, branches and additional purchases. These are statutory business-registration charges, separate from professional assistance or operating approvals.
Key takeaways
- Confirm citizenship or permanent resident eligibility before budgeting for the enterprise route.
- A partnership’s base charge applies to the business; adding partners does not multiply it.
- Count branches and paid years together when checking a registration subtotal.
- Save approval documents promptly and track expiry separately from payment.
The published charges for each registration type
For ordinary paid registration, SSM charges MYR 30 a year for a sole proprietor using the owner’s identity-card name, or MYR 60 a year for a trade-name sole proprietorship or ordinary partnership. Each registered branch adds MYR 5 a year. These rates appear in SSM’s business fee schedule and were checked on October 28, 2026.
| Official item | MYR amount | Charging unit | Budget treatment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal-name sole proprietor | 30 | Per registration year | Main registration charge |
| Trade-name sole proprietor | 60 | Per registration year | Main registration charge |
| Ordinary partnership | 60 | Per registration year | Per business, not per partner |
| Registered branch | 5 | Per branch per year | Additional to the main charge |
| Business information | 10 | Per purchase | Separate information product |
| Change of particulars | 20 | Per change application | Not an annual registration fee |
The table covers prescribed SSM items, not an all-in business-opening price. It excludes adviser charges, licences, premises and operating cash. No professional-service price or SST-inclusive commercial package is represented. If you purchase assistance, require the supplier to show its fee, disbursements and applicable tax separately from the statutory amount.
A partnership does not multiply the MYR 60 annual base by the number of partners. Likewise, buying business information does not buy another year of registration. Registration years and registered branches drive the recurring calculation. Keep purchases and change applications on their own lines.
Check the structure behind the fee
Confirm the owners and naming route before using a headline registration amount.
Confirm eligible owners and the name basis
The lower personal-name rate is available to an eligible sole owner using the name recorded on the identity card. An ordinary partnership uses a trade name. SSM’s ROB brochure distinguishes these categories and describes the route for businesses in Peninsular Malaysia and the Federal Territory of Labuan; do not automatically apply it to a Sabah or Sarawak enterprise.
The current EzBiz eligibility instructions require owners to be Malaysian citizens or permanent residents aged at least 18, and all owners or partners to have verified EzBiz accounts. A Malaysian address or local contact does not establish permanent resident status. Check every proposed owner before selecting a fee category.
Use the actual ownership arrangement to choose the route. Two people running the venture as partners should not describe it as one person’s sole proprietorship merely to obtain a cheaper fee. Foreign founders who cannot use this enterprise route should assess another suitable structure; Malaysia company registration has a separate company setup pathway.
SSM’s new-business registration guidelines allow a registration term from one to five years and require registration within 30 days of commencing business. The term is a payment variable; that filing deadline does not dispense with any licence needed before an activity begins. Establish the intended name, valid term and branch count before calculating a subtotal.
Calculate the bill for years and branches
For an unchanged set of branches registered for the same full term, calculate: annual main rate × years + MYR 5 × branches × years. Add MYR 10 only if purchasing business information. This is an arithmetic model derived from the published charges, not a substitute for the actual checkout where a branch or term changes mid-cycle.
| Illustrative ordinary-paid case | Main registration | Branches and information | Official subtotal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal-name sole owner; 1 year; no branches; no information purchase | MYR 30 × 1 = MYR 30 | MYR 0 | MYR 30 |
| Trade-name sole owner; 3 years; 1 branch; information purchased once | MYR 60 × 3 = MYR 180 | MYR 5 × 1 × 3 + MYR 10 = MYR 25 | MYR 205 |
| Partnership; 2 years; 4 branches; no information purchase | MYR 60 × 2 = MYR 120 | MYR 5 × 4 × 2 = MYR 40 | MYR 160 |
These examples assume a new application with no special fee relief, amendment, penalty or intermediary charge. They illustrate official components only. Do not add a purchased information product every year unless another purchase is actually made; do not put partner contributions or business stock into the registration-fee total.
Before authorising payment, write down the chosen inputs beside the portal amount. A discrepancy becomes easier to diagnose: check naming category first, then the paid term, then branch quantity, then additional products. Resolve a mismatch before submitting another payment. A fresh payment should not be the first response to an unexplained total.
Reconcile an unexpected registration total
Bring the chosen years, branches and itemised charges so the difference can be identified.
Separate renewals, changes and payment evidence
Renewal uses the same published annual main and branch rates; it is not a private company’s annual return. EzBiz also lists MYR 20 for a change of particulars and no fee for business termination. Its renewal service covers the period before expiry and within 12 months afterwards. That service window does not itself authorise trading with an expired registration.
For the complete application route, follow the enterprise registration steps through SSM . Keep this fee check alongside the ownership and activity details so the amount approved relates to the same business that is being registered.
- Match the selected name category, years and branches to the application preview before paying.
- Retain the transaction reference and receipt, then verify the application outcome rather than treating payment as approval.
- Download the certificate and any purchased business information after approval; record the expiry date for renewal.
- If charged but uncertain of the result, reconcile the existing transaction and status before opening a duplicate application.
SSM’s EzBiz service page says approved certificates and purchased business information are downloadable within 90 days of approval. Save the files promptly, with the receipt and a note of what each payment covered. The certificate, transaction record and renewal date answer different questions and should remain separately identifiable.
Approve the correct SSM payment
Approve the SSM payment when the owners qualify, the name category matches the structure, and the selected years and branches reproduce the expected bill. Keep a second budget for professional help, permissions and operating expenditure. The registration subtotal is a filing budget, not permission to operate. SSM’s registration guidelines separately place responsibility for required licences, permits and approvals on business owners.
Stop the payment decision if the ownership route is unavailable, the location falls outside this ROB pathway, or the checkout cannot be reconciled. Resolve that specific issue first. A small difference in the statutory charge is less significant than paying for a registration the actual owners cannot use.
Plan the registration and operating budget
Set out the SSM payment and any separate permissions or support needed for the proposed activity.
Frequently asked questions
Is the MYR 30 route available to a foreign resident?
Residence alone is insufficient. EzBiz requires Malaysian citizenship or permanent resident status as well as the age condition; check the proposed owner’s actual status.
Do these figures cover an LLP registration?
No. These calculations concern ROB sole proprietorships and ordinary partnerships. An LLP uses a separate registration route and needs its own fee check.
Do these figures include SST on an adviser’s invoice?
No commercial invoice is priced here. The figures identify prescribed SSM charges. Professional assistance, its tax treatment and any disbursements need separate written terms.
Should I assume that a free-registration scheme applies?
No. The examples use ordinary paid registration. Any special fee-relief scheme has its own eligibility and availability conditions, which must be checked before reducing the budget.
Does a payment receipt prove that I can begin trading?
A receipt records a payment. Confirm registration approval and any activity or premises permissions separately before treating the business as ready to operate.
